ersatz is being created using Macromedia Director and the video tracking Xtra TTC-Pro, from Danny Rozen, smoothware.com.

The 3D body scan will be rigged and a series of motion captures applied to this to create a library of animation sequences. The motion capture will be of subtle movements, depicting two distinct states:

  1. an unwatched 'ambient' state, where the character is at rest
  2. a 'posed', watched state

These two states will be triggered by the viewers interaction with the work. When the viewer is at a distance, outwith the distinct, spot lit 'viewing space', the portrait is at rest in it's unwatch 'ambient' state. At this time the project will randomly play a sequence of 'ambient' state animations.

When the viewer enters the 'viewing space', the portrait quickly takes on a posed stance, which it holds as long as the viewer interacts with it. Once the viewer leaves the spot light, the portrait goes back to it's ambient, unwatched state.
