TINY-IN

TINY-IN is a two year EPSRC DTI LINK funded project that started in December 2002. Our partners in this project are the Knowledge Media Institute (part of the Open University), and Pepper’s Ghost Productions, creators of the 3D computer animation TV series Tiny Planets. Tiny Planets is shown in the UK on Children’s ITV and in over 70 other countries worldwide.

The goal of TINY-IN is to produce an interactive narrative system that gives the user an engaging and entertaining experience, combining the interactivity of a computer game with the dramatic tension and emotional involvement of a movie. Using the Tiny Planets characters, worlds and props as a testbed, we aim to produce a methodology that will allow production companies such as Pepper’s Ghost to gain extra mileage from their existing assets; new content will be produced using old characters and worlds for very little extra cost. We are also investigating the use of tangible interfaces for our system.

Following a review of the state of the art of interactive narrative, we have been working on a demo of our ideas in Macromedia Shockwave. The demo is based on an episode of Tiny Planets in which the main characters Bing and Bong land on the Tiny Planet of Nature and find a machine that lets them change the season. They explore the effects of the weather, and learn a few things along the way!
