Why Use Motion
Capture?
- Realistic
motions: The motions of actors, athletes, and dancers are captured,
not reconstructed by animators. The Motion is subtle...
- Economy:
More predictable results are obtained in a much shorter time, especially
when complex movements are involved. In PC game creation, performance
capture and animation offers an economical alternative to shooting
video, thus avoiding makeup, costumes, lighting, sets, etc.
- Speed of Production:
From shooting to previewing can often be done in minutes. A small
production team with a single actor can produce many complex animations
in an afternoon.
- Artistic Control:
Producers can often see the results of a capture within minutes. Meanwhile,
no flexibility is lost -- if the producer wants to alter a captured
performance, the movement can be incrementally edited with standard
animation tools including inverse kinematics, skin deformation, etc.
The producer can also add variations and aberrations to movements.
- Accumulation
of Digital Resources: Once captured, the motion can be mapped
to any variety of figures (age, size, race, clothing, etc.)
- Virtual Camera
Angles: Once captured, camera views can be synthesized from any
position, including overhead views or shots "up through the floor."
